NC State Graduation Session | Jamee

Graduation, Portrait

Hey ya’ll! I hope that you all are doing well as you read this! I recently had the pleasure of completing a NC State graduation session for Jamee. In our planning meeting for her session, she shared with me the story behind why she wanted to celebrate with a graduation session. You see, like Jamee I also graduated from college in my 30’s. Thirty-six to be exact. So I could for sure relate to what she was telling me about at least that part of her journey. I thought that other ladies could benefit and be encouraged by hearing Jamee’s story. Read a little of it below!

I’m originally from Goldsboro, NC and I graduated from Goldsboro High School in 2008.  I started the pursuit of my degree at Howard University in Washington, DC (HUUUUU!!!) that very year and to this day I have no regrets…..well, except losing my mind and my scholarship because I decided to focus more on partying than on my studies, I definitely regret that!

The Transition

By 2010, I could no longer afford to stay in school. So I moved back home and decided to get married and start a family with my then boyfriend soon-to-be ex-husband.  In 2015, I enlisted in the Navy as a nuclear electronic technician and in 2018 I was accepted into a commissioning program called STA-21.  As a part of the program I would remain on active duty while attending school full time in pursuit of my degree.  I chose to come back home to NC and get my degree in mechanical engineering from NC State. This way, I could be close to family. It has been a life changing experience the entire 3 years I’ve been here.

From the moment I gave birth to my daughter to the moment I gave birth to my son to now, my children have been my motivation to do more and be better with every opportunity presented to me.  My daughter drove me to enlist and my son drove me to apply for STA-21 and now I am a college graduate and Naval Officer because of them.  This is by no means the end of my journey but I am extremely proud of how far I’ve come.

Thank you so very much for helping me capture this milestone and for seeing my vision.  I hope to work with you again sometime in the future.
